Jeju, an island located in the southernmost tip of Korea, is commonly known as „The Island of Peace“ with its clean air, water, and the wonderful landscapes. Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival (JIWEF) is one of the major art festivals of Jeju, harmonized with the peaceful image of the island, the romanticism of summer, and the characteristic of wind music which is easy to perform outdoors.
Since 1995, JIWEF has been held every other year with the effort and the work of Jeju natives. In 1998, we prepared a small size professional ensemble festival with participants from Japan, Taiwan, and Germany. This marked the start of the festival on even numbered years focused on professionalism along with odd numbered years focused on audience participation and general popularity. Since 2000, we have organized an international brass competition in addition to the ensemble festival.
Jeju International Brass Competition seeks to find out and foster young, talented wind instrumentalists from all around the world and to give them an opportunity to share friendships and cultural exchange with one and another. This competition is the only competition in the world that holds the entire brass divisions including Horn, Trumpet, Tenor Trombone, Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Tuba, Brass Quintet, and Percussions.
Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival and Jeju International Brass Competition pursue to promote the popularity and specialty of the wind music by hosting both events together.
